Eco-Tourism Organization in Oceania
Eco-tourism Australia is the national body for the Eco-tourism industry. It was formed in 1991 as a not-for-profit organization and has significantly contributed to long term environmental sustainability on a national and global level through its ground-breaking and world class ECO Certification and Eco-Guide Certification Programs.
I chose Eco-tourism Australia because they are consistent in using various Eco-tourism principles. The two principles they adapt the most are:
1. It should provide first-hand, participatory, and enlightening experiences
2. It should promote moral and ethical responsibilities and behaviors towards the natural and cultural environment by all parties.
I think Eco-Tourism Australia is a quite experienced organization which can be authority of the industry with approximately 1,000 members throughout Australia and has maintained a strong focus on the facilitation of environmental best practice and a sustainable approach to tourism, the information and experiences from the two programs organized by Eco-Tourism Australia are rich. The ECO Certification Program is a world first and has been developed to address the need to identify genuine Eco-tourism operators in Australia. ECO Certification provides an assurance that a certified product is backed by a commitment to best practice ecological sustainability, natural area management and the provision of quality Eco-tourism experiences. The Eco-Guide Certification Program was launched in 2000 and provides a credential, endorsing the recipient as a guide who will deliver an authentic, environmentally responsible and professional Eco-tourism experience. The Eco-Guide Program provides guides with a cost effective and convenient advantage in being able to attain both Eco-Guide and the national Guides of Australia (GOA) accreditation in one application. Since the two programs are influential in the industry, Eco-Tourism not only provide the enlightening experiences to the industry but also promote moral and ethical responsibilities and behaviors towards the natural and cultural environment.
